Their compact design and portability make them a tempting choice for the fun-time city hopper, but it’s now more common for a rider to want a bike that can do both - quick trips and longer adventures.
We’re ready to dispel myths and trip away any misconceptions around the performance of a lightweight folding bike for long distance riding. And honestly, to brag about the true potential of a Hummingbird folding bike!
The open road, the freedom, the adrenaline hit - there are many enticing aspects of a long ride.
Firstly, let’s preface this by saying if the sole purpose of your new bike purchase is for long distance only, we’re the first to say that investing in a full sized bike is worth your while. However, if you’re thinking more about casual riding, getting about the city, with the odd lengthy cycle thrown into the mix, buying a folding bike is just fine.
Long rides are more of a physical feat; on the body and on the bike. Due to the petite frame and the small wheels on a folder, this is where the cyclists’ doubt comes in... “Do they have the stamina to handle a long ride?”
Comfort, performance, and convenience are the defining successes of a folding bike on long rides. Which is lucky, since the compact frames must keep pace with their traditional counterparts, while also offering portability and endurance.
The variety of folding bike types—electric, multi-speed, and single-speed, to name a few—speaks to the adaptability of these bikes.
The prime bike choice for longer bike rides isn’t about aesthetics, although folding bikes sure look the part. It’s about materials, construction, functions and beyond.
The backbone–quite literally–of any bike is its frame materials. The frame determines the bike's resilience and performance. From aluminium to titanium to carbon, each “typical,” each material has a unique blend of weight, sturdiness, and shock absorption.
Frame materials dictate the bike's ability to absorb vibrations, maintain stability, and endure prolonged use, and there’s no material that can handle the previous quite like a carbon fibre.
The smoothness of a journey lies in the transition between gears. Long rides demand adaptability—scaling steep inclines, cruising along flats, and conquering downhill. The gears in multi-speed folding bikes enable this versatility.
In a world of ideals, an 8-gear set-up is top choice, especially for longer rides. An 8-gear folding bike has the configurations to tackle almost any demand you can encounter on a long ride. For a bike with a smaller wheel set, multi-speed folding bikes have a lot of bite.
Comfort on the road is non-negotiable for extended rides. Suspension systems, whether rigid, front, or full, help to minimise impact and enhance ride quality.
The diverse terrains, from smooth pavements to rugged trails, need adaptability in a folding bike's suspension system. The ideal choice not only absorbs shocks but also ensures a smoother, more comfortable ride, irrespective of the journey's twists and turns.
The quest for finding the ideal folding bike for long rides is nuanced, but it doesn’t need to be. As aforementioned, we’re not going to try and falsely persuade you that if you’re long distance riding and long distance only, shop for a road bike or mountain bike.
However, if you want an accomplice to explore the city, hop on public transport, head out on your Sunday morning coffee run… but then you fancy a longer adventure occasionally - folding bikes align perfectly with your cycling dreams.
The 8-speed Shimano Nexus gear hub on the Hummingbird Multi-Speed bike offers more than urban efficiency—it's a reliable companion for longer journeys. Its smooth, accurate shifts with reduced drag ensure a comfortable and efficient ride across varied terrains, crucial for extended adventures, and allow higher speeds with less effort. The twist grip shifter's easy operation, even when stationary, adds convenience, making it a trustworthy choice for occasional long-distance cycling.
The Hummingbird Multi-Speed Belt Drive bike, designed for urban life, is more than a city bike—it's a versatile option primed for longer rides.
The key lies in its belt drive system, a feature that extends its suitability for longer journeys and elevates its versatility. The 8-speed Shimano Nexus gear hub, coupled with this belt drive, ensures a ride optimised for efficiency and adaptability across various terrains—a crucial factor for occasional long-distance cycling.
Moreover, the low maintenance and quiet operation offered by the carbon-reinforced belts add another layer of suitability for extended rides. With no need for grease and the lasting endurance of these drives, belt-drive folding bikes become an ideal choice for hassle-free, longer cycling adventures.
The Electric Hummingbird isn't just a city bike—it's the world's lightest folding electric bike designed to extend your journey effortlessly. With a 250W motor and the enhanced Gen 2.0 offering 50% more torque and 20% increased range, you can cover over 50 km on a single charge.
The remote control for on-demand settings and a boost feature ensure seamless rides, even conquering steep hills. Its swift folding mechanism in just 5 seconds provides quick readiness for your extended cycling adventures.
Maintaining your folding bike’s peak performance on extended rides is crucial. Long journeys bring unique wear and tear, requiring special care to uphold the bike’s efficiency and endurance.
Preserving your folding bike's endurance and performance through long rides relies on maintenance. Routine care—cleaning, lubrication, and meticulous attention to critical components—upholds the bike's ability to withstand the rigours of extended journeys.
Addressing stress points, gear systems, and tire wear through regular inspections becomes essential in ensuring the bike's resilience to prolonged stress and varied conditions. Going beyond routine upkeep, strategies like proper storage and professional tune-ups play a significant role in extending the bike's life and functionality, safeguarding its reliability throughout your long-distance adventures.
Through our exploration of frame materials, gear systems, and maintenance essentials, we've unveiled the potential and adaptability of folding bikes for extended journeys. The reality? These compact folding bikes stand ready to conquer miles, offering comfort, performance, and portability for the dedicated traveller.

So, fasten your helmet, prepare your senses for an Autumnal feast, and join us on a journey through London’s nature.
Before we set off on our journey through London's parks and gardens, let's ensure you're well-prepared for your autumn biking adventure. Here are a few essential steps to consider:
For exploring London's parks, Hummingbird's single-speed folding bike is an excellent choice. These bikes are lightweight, foldable, and practical for navigating the city's streets and serene paths. They are versatile, making it easy to switch between biking and walking during your park-hopping.
Prioritise your safety by wearing a sturdy helmet at all times. Equip your Hummingbird bike with front and rear lights if you plan to cycle during low-light hours. Additionally, opt for reflective clothing to enhance your visibility to other road users.
London's autumn weather can be unpredictable, so dress in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to stay dry, add an insulating mid-layer, and finish with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Don't forget to keep your extremities warm with gloves and a hat. Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks are a must for your cycling shoes.
While spontaneity can be enjoyable, it's wise to plan your route. Identify the parks and gardens you want to visit and map out a path that optimises your experience while minimising unnecessary backtracking. Consider suitable stops for coffee, food and rest along the way, and be sure to check for any park closures or events.
Our autumnal adventure kicks off with a visit to Regent's Park, a 395-acre green oasis that boasts the beauty of the season in its own right. It's more than just a park; it's a masterpiece of nature.
Regent's Park is a place where nature and culture coexist. As autumn arrives, the park comes alive with vibrant colours. The Queen Mary's Gardens are a delight, home to over 12,000 roses and an array of other beautiful blooms. Cycling through this garden, you'll be greeted by the scent of countless roses and meticulously manicured hedges and fountains.
A bike ride along the Regent's Canal is a must-do experience. This picturesque route leads you through a tunnel of trees, with leaves creating a golden canopy over the path. It's a captivating journey with glimpses of elegant houseboats, swans, and waterside cafes where you can pause for a coffee en route.
Autumn in Regent's Park offers more than just foliage. It's a season for various outdoor events and activities. Keep an eye out for open-air theatre performances, art exhibitions and concerts. The park is buzzing with energy, providing an opportunity to mingle with locals and fellow cyclists who share your appreciation for autumn.
Leaving behind the splendour of Regent's Park, we head to another beloved spot in London – Holland Park. This tranquil escape in the heart of the city provides a charming contrast to the urban hustle and bustle.
Holland Park's autumn charm lies in its simplicity. The woodlands come alive with the scent of fallen leaves, and the Japanese maple trees in the Kyoto Garden paint a vivid picture of red and golden leaves. The park offers a calm and serene atmosphere, perfect for those seeking a peaceful getaway from the city's pace.
The Japanese-inspired Kyoto Garden shines in autumn. The bright colours of the maple trees beautifully complement the peaceful pond and stone lanterns. A visit here feels like a journey to a distant land - a truly serene spot for reflection.
The Ecology Centre is a must-visit for nature-enthusiasts, where you can learn about the park's diverse flora and fauna. Autumn brings change, so you might have the chance to spot migratory birds and other wildlife residing in the park.
Don't forget to wander through the grounds of Holland House, a Jacobean mansion with a storied past, heavily damaged during World War II. While the house itself isn't open to the public, the gardens are accessible and provide a wonderful space for a picnic or stroll.
After your explorations, you might be ready for a meal or a cup of tea. Holland Park is surrounded by charming neighbourhoods offering a range of dining options. Whether you're in the mood for a traditional British tea or international cuisine, there’s something to satisfy your cravings.
Our journey through London's autumnal beauty continues as we head east to explore the delightful combination of Victoria Park and London Fields. East London takes on a unique charm during the fall, making it a must-visit destination for our park-hopping adventure.
Victoria Park, affectionately known as "Vicky Park" by locals, undergoes a magical transformation in autumn. The park's 86 hectares are adorned with trees showcasing a stunning array of autumn colours. A leisurely bike ride here is a treat for the senses as you pedal beneath golden canopies with leaves rustling in the breeze.
Nestled next to the park is the Victoria Park Village, a charming neighbourhood filled with independent shops and cafes. It's an ideal stop for refreshments, whether you're in the mood for a hearty breakfast, a cup of artisan coffee, or a delicious slice of cake. This cosy corner of the city offers an authentic slice of London life.
Just a short distance from Victoria Park, you'll find Broadway Market, a bustling and artistic hub that thrives in autumn. On a Saturday and Sunday, market stalls line the street, offering an eclectic mix of street food, artisanal goods, and vintage treasures. It's a great place to immerse yourself in local culture and perhaps pick up a unique souvenir.
Our adventure leads us to London Fields, a smaller park just a short ride from Victoria Park. Here, you'll find a buzzing atmosphere that's characteristic of East London. In autumn, the park attracts picnickers, joggers, and even open-air yoga enthusiasts. It's the perfect place to soak up the local vibe.
Both Victoria Park and London Fields offer not only autumnal beauty but also an opportunity to engage with the creative and dynamic spirit of East London, exposing you to a blend of natural beauty and urban energy.
Our journey through London's autumnal wonders now takes us to the southwestern outskirts of the city, where the majestic Richmond Park awaits. This vast expanse of natural beauty, with a history dating back to the 17th century, becomes even more enchanting as autumn weaves its spell.
Richmond Park isn't just a park; it's a royal playground with a rich history. In autumn, it transforms into a tapestry of red, gold, and amber leaves. As you cycle through the park's wide avenues, you'll be surrounded by a corridor of trees, showcasing the beauty of the season.
One of the most captivating charms of Richmond Park is its resident deer. The park is home to hundreds of red and fallow deer, and autumn is their rutting season. You might have the chance to witness the magnificent spectacle of stags competing for the attention of hinds. Remember to observe these majestic creatures from a respectful distance and, if you're fortunate, capture their grace and power with your camera.
Visit Pembroke Lodge, a historic Georgian mansion nestled within the park. It's not only a place for a cup of tea but also a piece of living history. The lodge offers stunning views of the park and the Thames Valley, making it an ideal spot for a refreshing break. As you enjoy a warm drink, you can delve into the park's heritage and learn more about its past.
For those seeking more floral beauty, explore the Isabella Plantation, an exquisite woodland garden within Richmond Park. In autumn, Japanese maples, camellias, and azaleas create a colourful spectacle that's truly mesmerising.
Richmond Park is a haven for birdwatchers. The serene lake is a hotspot for waterfowl, and you might spot swans, ducks, and other bird species along the paths. This is a park that not only delights the eyes but also the ears as you listen to the songs of birds among the trees.
Richmond Park is a place where nature, history, and wildlife come together in symphony. While exploring this park in the heart of autumn, you'll be left in awe of its beauty.
Our exploration of London's autumnal beauty now brings us to the heart of royal elegance: Kensington Gardens. Nestled beside Kensington Palace, these gardens offer a captivating blend of natural splendour and regal history, which is particularly enchanting in the fall.
Kensington Gardens has a strong connection to the British monarchy. It was once the private gardens of Kensington Palace, the current residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. As you wander through the gardens, you can feel the regal ambiance that surrounds you.
While the palace's interior is not open to the public year-round, the exterior and surrounding gardens are a sight to behold. Take a moment to capture the grandeur of the palace and imagine the history that has unfolded within its walls.
Head to the Italian Gardens, a serene oasis within Kensington Gardens. The symmetrical layout, ornate fountains, and lovely plantings make this spot perfect for a leisurely stroll and some peaceful reflection. As autumn leaves fall into the fountains, they create a poetic scene.
Art in Nature's Embrace: For art enthusiasts, the Serpentine Galleries offer a delightful experience. These contemporary art spaces are found within Kensington Gardens and host rotating exhibitions. After immersing yourself in the park's natural beauty, explore thought-provoking artworks inside the galleries.
The Long Water, an ornamental lake stretching through Kensington Gardens, is a favourite among walkers and cyclists. As the leaves on the surrounding trees transition, this area becomes even more enchanting. It's a place where you can escape the city's hustle and bustle without leaving the heart of London.
Our autumnal park journey now takes us to the southwestern edge of the city, where Battersea Park welcomes us. This riverside oasis is a tranquil and picturesque escape for those seeking a break from the city's hustle and bustle.
Battersea Park, with its 200 acres of green space, takes on an inviting atmosphere in autumn. The air carries the gentle scent of fallen leaves, making it an ideal place to embrace the changing of the seasons and experience riverside tranquillity in London.
One of the park's notable landmarks is the Peace Pagoda, a symbol of peace and unity. This Buddhist stupa stands in contrast to the city's skyline and provides a serene spot for contemplation. The message of peace resonates in the park's tranquil setting.
Battersea Park's prime location along the Thames River makes cycling along the riverside path a delightful experience. Enjoy views of the river, the passing boats, and the distant London skyline. The calm waters create a soothing backdrop to your bike ride.
If you're exploring with family, Battersea Park has something for everyone. The Battersea Park Children's Zoo is a favourite among young visitors, offering a peaceful setting for children to connect with animals. Additionally, the park provides playgrounds, boating opportunities, and sports facilities.
After your adventures, consider relaxing with a meal or a coffee. The Pear Tree Café, nestled within Battersea Park, offers a charming space to unwind. Its waterside terrace provides a peaceful setting for enjoying seasonal dishes and drinks while taking in the park's beauty.

Here's some of our favourite things to do on a weekend in Hackney Wick:
Saint Espresso

Randy’s Wing Bar
Randy's is a standout in Hackney Wick's food scene. It's a family-run restaurant with quality at centre stage.
Scoff’s Grill
Scoff's Grill is an unassuming Turkish restaurant that quietly serves some of the best food in the Wick. You'll find all the coal classics you'd expect, along with a selection of seafood and casserole dishes. Notably, the food here won't break the bank.

The friendly and knowledgeable staff are happy to assist you in finding the right bottle, without any pretentiousness.
Lucky & Joy
Run by former Morito colleagues, Lucky & Joy is a charming spot offering regional Chinese cuisine. The pastel-coloured lighting and simple decor let the food shine. Chatsworth Road Market
Chatsworth Road market, once a bustling hub in the 1930s, had up to 200 stalls operating 4 to 5 days a week, spanning the entire street. Over the post-war years, the number of stalls and market days dwindled until it closed in 1990. Thanks to persistent efforts by local residents and traders, the market made a triumphant return in 2010 and has been running weekly since June 2011. Today, it stands as a beloved Sunday market, serving the local community and steadily expanding.
Triangle Store
Nestled on Chatsworth Road, Triangle Store embodies a straightforward idea – conscious consumption. They offer a lovely range of items available both in-store and online, covering homeware, kitchenware, accessories, and more.

]]>As cyclists sought to conquer challenging terrains, the multi-speed bike was born, destined to transform the cycling experience. Evolving from a mere necessity, multi-speed bikes offer remarkable adaptability, allowing riders to soar through any landscape. From those humble beginnings, the multi-speed folding bike has emerged as a marvel, exemplifying the perfect partnership of form, function and practicality.
At the heart of every multi-speed folding bike is its most celebrated feature - the gear range. Like a skilled conductor, the gear range allows riders to fine-tune their cycling performance by changing gear ratios, making the most of each pedal stroke in any scenario. Lower gears make steep hills a breeze, while higher gears unleash momentum on flat roads. This dynamic adaptability ensures a smooth and enjoyable ride, regardless of the terrain you face.
Compact, collapsible, and utterly ingenious, multi-speed folding bikes have redefined the concept of space-efficient design. Their ability to fold seamlessly transforms them into portable packages, allowing for easy storage in tight spaces, such as apartments, offices, or even the trunk of a car. Welcome the spirit of convenience and practicality as these bikes blend into your modern lifestyle, enabling you to commute efficiently and embark on escapades without any constraints.
No longer weighed down by cumbersome bicycles, modern engineering has achieved the perfect balance of lightweight design without compromising durability. Lift your multi-speed folding bike with ease, knowing that every ounce of its construction is a testament to its portability and sturdiness. This balanced fusion of form and function allows you to seamlessly transition from pedalling to carrying, making your journey even more delightful.
The intriguing journey of multi-speed bikes is traced to the early 20th century when cyclists sought ways to conquer the challenges of diverse terrains. As sweet as the idea of coasting down flat roads might be, the reality of tackling steep inclines proved to be a taxing endeavour. In response to this hurdle, bicycle innovators began experimenting with gear systems, envisioning a future where riders could conquer any landscape.
The first iterations of multi-speed bikes featured crude mechanisms, often involving multiple sprockets and chainrings. Early adopters of these innovations soon realised that the ability to change gears could revolutionise the cycling experience. Thus, the concept of multi-speed bikes took root, sparking an evolution that would redefine the art of cycling.
As the demand for improved cycling performance grew, so did the innovations in multi-speed bikes. Manufacturers and designers worked tirelessly to refine gear systems, introducing advanced mechanisms that flawlessly facilitated gear changes. Gradually, the once-utilitarian bicycles transformed into innovative wonders, bragging a spectrum of gears to suit the needs of cyclists from all walks of life.
During the mid-20th century, the advent of derailleurs revolutionised the cycling industry. The ingenious mechanism allowed riders to switch between multiple gears effortlessly, expanding the bike's gear range and empowering cyclists to venture into mixed terrains with newfound ease. With each advancement, the multi-speed bike became a symbol of cutting-edge engineering, fueling a global cycling culture that continues to thrive.
Fast forward to the modern era, and multi-speed folding bikes have carved their niche as the epitome of versatility and convenience. The evolution of these folding wonders has allowed every type of cyclist to revel in the joys of cycling, clear of limitations. Compact and agile, these bikes embody the spirit of freedom, allowing riders to conquer the urban jungle or the untamed wilderness.
The integration of lightweight materials and state-of-the-art engineering has further propelled the evolution of multi-speed bikes. From titanium frames that strike the perfect balance between strength and weight to carbon fibre components that enhance performance, the modern multi-speed folding bike is a testament to human ingenuity and engineering prowess.
The journey of multi-speed bikes is far from over. Innovations continue to reshape the landscape of cycling, with each new advancement moving us towards a future where cycling reaches remarkable heights.
The gear range of a multi-speed bike is crucial for its efficiency. It depends on the gear ratios, which are determined by the number of teeth on the chainrings and the cogs on the cassette. These ratios define how easy or fast it is to pedal and adapt to different terrains.
Simply put, a lower gear ratio (achieved with a smaller chainring and larger rear cog) eases the effort required to pedal, making it ideal for ascending steep hills or conquering challenging terrains. On the other hand, a higher gear ratio (achieved with a larger chainring and smaller rear cog) enables the bike to cover more ground with each pedal stroke, facilitating higher speeds on flat surfaces or during downhill rides.
The true beauty of multi-speed bikes lies in their versatility, effortlessly gliding through - and dominating - diverse landscapes. Whether faced with a steep uphill climb, a winding mountain trail, or a smooth city street, riders can fine-tune their gear selection to match the demands of the moment.
In hilly terrains, lower gear ratios shine, allowing cyclists to maintain a comfortable rhythm as they climb. The result is a more enjoyable and sustainable climbing experience, leaving ample energy for the descent that follows. On level ground, higher gear ratios come into play, unlocking the bike's potential for exhilarating speed.
Pedalling efficiency is of paramount importance, determining how effectively cyclists transfer their energy into forward motion.
In low-gear ratios, riders enjoy an enhanced mechanical advantage. This allows smoother pedalling, especially on steep inclines, as each pedal stroke requires less force to propel the bike forward.
Conversely, in higher gears, the chain wraps around the smaller chainring and rear cogs. While these gears offer increased speed, they require more forceful pedalling. This setup is ideal for flat stretches or downhill rides, where riders can capitalise on their momentum and enjoy higher speeds.
For the modern urbanite, navigating the cityscape can be daunting. Traffic jams, crowded streets, and unpredictable commutes have become the norm.
With a compact design and folding capabilities, the multi-speed folding bike integrates perfectly into urban living. No longer restricted by strict schedules or congested roads, commuters can weave through traffic, bypassing gridlocked cars and arriving at their destinations with good time.
The gear range of these bikes proves indispensable in the urban landscape. With a few swift gear changes, you can maintain an optimal pace without breaking a sweat.
Beyond the confines of urban living lies a world of adventures, waiting to be explored. Multi-speed folding bikes rise to the occasion, beckoning riders to embrace the great outdoors.
As you venture into serene countryside trails, the lower gear ratios become your trusted ally, empowering you to ascend steep slopes. Feel the rhythm of the ride as you conquer the hilly terrain. With every turn of the pedals, a symphony of motion unfolds, and the boundaries of exploration grow before your very eyes.
As the world seeks ways to embrace healthier lifestyles, multi-speed folding bikes offer a gateway to transformation. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or looking to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, bikes hold the keys to a fitter and more active lifestyle.
The gear range becomes your ally in the pursuit of better health. In lower gears, you can engage in low-impact pedalling, gently building endurance and strength without straining your joints.
For those wanting a more rigorous workout, higher gear ratios provide the perfect challenge. Engage in high-intensity cycling sessions, pushing yourself to attain greater speeds and elevate your heart rate. The gear range adapts to your fitness goals, allowing you to customise your ride and create a workout regimen tailored to your needs.
The allure of multi-speed folding bikes extends far beyond seasoned cyclists. Novices, casual riders, and enthusiasts of all skill levels can enjoy multi-speed bikes.
For beginners, the gear range provides a gentle introduction to cycling. As you find your balance and build your confidence, lower gear ratios offer a forgiving and comfortable pedalling experience. Tackle gradual inclines or meander through scenic routes, all while mastering the art of cycling at your own pace.
Experienced cyclists, on the other hand, discover a canvas for limitless exploration. The gear range unlocks new dimensions of challenge, inviting you to conquer terrains you once thought impassable. Push your limits, set new personal records, and embrace the art of cycling with an insatiable passion.
Selecting the perfect multi-speed folding bike is a journey in itself. There's a treasure trove of options to suit your personal preferences and needs. Key factors to consider when shopping for a bike that perfectly complements your lifestyle are:
Consider the types of terrains you intend to ride. If your daily routes involve hilly landscapes or challenging off-road trails, opt for a bike with a broader gear range, allowing for effortless climbs and thrilling descents, such as an 8-gear hub. If your commutes primarily involve urban streets, a bike with a gear range for speed and efficiency may be ideal.
The bike frame material influences both its weight and durability. Lightweight materials like aluminium, carbon fibre or flax bike frames are favoured for their agility, making commuting and manoeuvring a breeze.
Evaluate the folding mechanism of the bike, as it determines how compactly you can fold the bike and how easily it can be carried or stored. Look for user-friendly folding systems that allow quick and efficient folding, resulting in a quick transition between cycling and other transportation.
The heart of any multi-speed folding bike lies in its gear range and performance specifications. Understanding these qualifies you to make an informed decision.
Assess the number of gears and the range of ratios. A wider gear range provides more versatility, allowing you to tackle various terrains and adapt to changing conditions effortlessly. Consider the highest and lowest gear ratios, as they play a crucial role in conquering steep hills and achieving optimal speeds.
Pay attention to the bike's shifting system, as smooth and precise gear changes are essential for a seamless riding experience. Modern multi-speed folding bikes often feature advanced derailleur systems that ensure swift and accurate gear shifts, enhancing your control and confidence on the road.
Brakes are a critical safety feature in any bike. Ensure the bike is equipped with reliable and responsive brakes, allowing for confident stops and effortless control during your rides. Disc brakes, in particular, are favoured for their superior stopping power and reliability, especially in various weather conditions. Another thing to consider is whether a chain-drive or belt-drive multi-speed bike is most compatible with your lifestyle.
The pursuit of the perfect multi-speed folding bike goes beyond technical specifications; it hinges on achieving a harmonious fit that caters to your comfort and riding style. A bike that matches your physique ensures that each ride is a delight, free from discomfort and strain.
Choose a frame size that complements your height and body proportions. A well-fitted bike ensures proper leg extension during pedalling and enables you to maintain an upright and relaxed posture while riding.
Consider the handlebar height and shape to find a comfortable grip that aligns with your riding preferences. Adjustable handlebars may offer added flexibility, allowing you to customise your riding position.
The saddle plays a significant role in your riding comfort. Look for a saddle that provides ample support and cushioning, reducing pressure on sensitive areas during long rides.
In the realm of cycling, where the pursuit of versatility and efficiency takes centre stage, the multi-speed folding bike is a sensation of modern engineering. Throughout this journey, we have explored the advantages of these remarkable two-wheeled companions, unearthing the secrets of their gear range, performance, and impact on various aspects of daily life.

To truly appreciate the value of flax, we must travel back in time and explore its historical significance. For centuries, flax has been cultivated and utilised by civilisations across the globe. ]]>In this blog post, we will delve into the myriad benefits of cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transportation, contributing to a cleaner environment and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
Join us as we explore how cycling can be a game-changer in our quest for sustainability.
With the dire consequences of climate change becoming evident, individuals, communities, and governments worldwide are prioritising environmental sustainability. The alarming rise in greenhouse gas emissions from traditional modes of transportation has prompted the need for alternative solutions that can ease our environmental impact.
Green transport plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, one of the biggest contributors to global warming. By adopting environmentally friendly modes of transportation, we can decrease our carbon footprint and take significant steps towards a more sustainable future.
Among the various options, cycling is a remarkably effective form of green transport. This age-old mode of transportation has experienced a resurgence in popularity due to its unparalleled benefits for both the environment and personal well-being. By exploring the advantages of cycling, we aim to highlight why it is a viable and impactful choice for reducing our carbon footprint.
We will delve deeper into cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transport and how it contributes to a carbon-neutral future.
Cycling stands as an example of an eco-friendly mode of transport, offering numerous benefits for both individuals and the environment. Let's explore why cycling is considered a carbon-neutral means of transportation and how it minimises our environmental impact.
Unlike traditional vehicles that rely on fossil fuels, cycling produces zero direct emissions. As a human-powered mode of transport, bicycles do not emit harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, making them an ideal choice for environmentally conscious individuals.
In addition to zero emissions, cycling boasts minimal environmental impact throughout its lifecycle. The production and maintenance of bicycles require significantly fewer resources compared to the manufacturing and operation of motorised vehicles.
Studies have shown that approximately 5.6 tonnes of CO2 are emitted during the manufacture of a standard petrol or diesel passenger car, compared to 96 kg of CO2 during bike production.
Companies such as ourselves are taking sustainable bike production one step further. The Hummingbird Flax bike is crafted entirely from flax plant fibres, presumed to be one of the world's most sustainable forms of transport, only preceded by walking. Even the waste during the bikes production stage is biodegradable, and the nature of the bike frame means it will ultimately break down at the end of its lifecycle.
When compared to motorised vehicles, cycling offers a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
According to studies, a typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of CO2 annually. On the other hand, bikes don't release harmful emissions or carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change.
If the rate of bicycle use increased moderately, we could save an estimated 6 to 14 million tons of CO2 each year.
By embracing cycling as a mode of transport, we can contribute to reducing air pollution and improving air quality in our communities. Motorised vehicles emit pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide, which have adverse effects on both human health and the environment.
Cycling not only contributes to a greener environment but also offers a wide array of health benefits for individuals of all ages. Let's delve into the positive impact that cycling can have on our physical fitness, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.
Regular cycling is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that gets your heart pumping and improves overall cardiovascular health. It helps strengthen the heart muscles, lowers blood pressure, and reduces the risk of heart diseases such as stroke, heart attacks, and high cholesterol levels.
Cycling is a fantastic way to manage weight and promote healthy body composition. It is a low-impact exercise that burns calories, helping to maintain a healthy weight or facilitate weight loss. Moreover, cycling engages various muscle groups, such as the legs, core, and glutes, leading to improved muscle tone and overall strength.
Engaging in cycling releases endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones in the brain, which can significantly reduce stress levels and improve mood. Cycling outdoors also provides an opportunity to connect with nature, enhancing feelings of relaxation, serenity, and overall mental well-being.
Regular cycling has been linked to improved cognitive function, including enhanced memory, concentration, and problem-solving abilities. The increased blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain during cycling contribute to better mental clarity and overall brain health.
Incorporating cycling into our daily routines not only helps us contribute to a sustainable future but also allows us to reap the multitude of health benefits it offers.
Investing in cycling infrastructure is vital for creating sustainable cities that prioritise green transport options. By developing dedicated cycling infrastructure and promoting active commuting, cities can reap numerous benefits for both the environment and the well-being of their residents.
Constructing well-designed bike lanes and dedicated cycling paths within cities encourages the safe and convenient integration of cycling into daily transportation. These infrastructure improvements provide cyclists with designated spaces, minimising the risk of accidents and promoting a cohesive urban cycling network.
Implementing bike-sharing programs allows individuals who may not own bicycles to easily access and utilise them for short trips. These programs provide affordable and convenient options for residents, reducing the reliance on private vehicles and increasing the adoption of cycling as a mode of transport.
Promoting active commuting, such as cycling to work or school, can significantly reduce traffic congestion in cities. With fewer cars on the road, not only is there less congestion and smoother traffic flow, but the air quality also improves, leading to a healthier and cleaner urban environment.
Investing in cycling infrastructure enhances the overall liveability of cities by creating safer and more vibrant public spaces. Cyclists can explore their surroundings more intimately, fostering a stronger sense of community and connection with their neighbourhoods. Additionally, cycling infrastructure promotes a healthier lifestyle, attracting residents and visitors to engage in physical activity and outdoor recreation.
By prioritising the development of cycling infrastructure, cities can foster sustainable mobility options and create environments that are conducive to healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.
In addition to its positive environmental and health impacts, cycling also brings about significant economic benefits at both the individual and community levels. Let's delve into how choosing cycling as a mode of transport can lead to cost-effectiveness and contribute to local economies.
Cycling eliminates the need for fuel consumption, offering substantial savings on transportation costs. Unlike motorised vehicles, bicycles do not require regular refuelling or expensive maintenance.
By opting for cycling, individuals can save money that would otherwise be spent on gasoline, parking fees, and vehicle maintenance.
The average costs of UK transport methods each year are:
So not only is cycling excellent for physical, mental and environmental benefits, it's easier on your wallet, too!
Regular physical activity, such as cycling, contributes to overall well-being and can reduce the risk of various health conditions. By promoting a healthy lifestyle, cycling helps individuals prevent chronic diseases, leading to potential savings on healthcare expenses. This cost-effectiveness extends to both personal medical costs and the overall burden on healthcare systems.
Cycling encourages individuals to explore their local communities and support nearby businesses. Cyclists are more likely to stop and visit local shops, cafes, and restaurants during their commutes or leisure rides. This increased foot traffic can provide a boost to local businesses and contribute to the economic growth of the community.
Cities that invest in cycling infrastructure and promote cycling-friendly environments often attract tourists seeking sustainable and active travel experiences. Tourists who cycle in a city not only contribute to the local economy through their spending on accommodations, dining, and attractions but also help promote the city as a cycling-friendly destination.
By embracing cycling as a mode of transport, individuals can enjoy significant cost savings while simultaneously contributing to the economic vitality of their communities.
From its carbon-neutral nature and minimal environmental impact to its positive impact on physical fitness, mental well-being, and local economies, cycling is a powerful solution for reducing our carbon footprint and fostering greener, healthier communities. By embracing cycling and investing in cycling infrastructure, we can contribute to a cleaner environment, improve our well-being, and create cities that prioritise sustainable and active transportation options.
Let us pedal towards a brighter future, where cycling plays a central role in our journey towards a more sustainable and liveable world.

With their chic attire, Copenhagen-ers effortlessly blend fashion and function, showcasing how cycling can be elegant and sophisticated.
Copenhagen's commitment to cycling is further reflected in its innovative urban planning. The city continually seeks new ways to prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, promoting car-free zones and green spaces. Public spaces are designed to encourage social interaction, with bike-friendly cafes and open squares inviting cyclists to rest and connect with fellow riders.
Nestled in the heart of Germany's Black Forest region, Freiburg shines as a shining example of sustainable urban mobility. This vibrant city has embraced cycling as a way to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.
Freiburg's cycling infrastructure is a testament to its commitment to green mobility. Extensive networks of bike lanes crisscross the city, allowing cyclists to traverse its charming streets with ease. The city has also implemented traffic-calming measures and bike-friendly traffic signals, ensuring the safety and convenience of cyclists.
One of Freiburg's notable achievements is its innovative bicycle parking system. The city boasts numerous multi-story bike parking facilities strategically located near major transit hubs and popular destinations. These secure and convenient parking facilities encourage residents to choose bicycles as their preferred mode of transportation, reducing the reliance on cars.
Freiburg's dedication to sustainable urban planning extends beyond cycling infrastructure. The city has implemented car-free zones, pedestrianised streets, and efficient public transportation systems, creating a holistic approach to green mobility. This integrated approach fosters a sense of community and connectivity, with residents enjoying vibrant public spaces that prioritise human interaction over automobile dominance.
As we pedal through the bicycle-friendly streets of Copenhagen and Freiburg, we witness how these cities have transformed their urban landscapes, placing people and sustainable transportation at the forefront. Their innovative approaches serve as inspiration for cities around the world, reminding us that creating cycling-friendly cities is not just about infrastructure but about cultivating a cultural shift toward active and sustainable mobility.
As our journey through the world's cycling communities draws to a close, we reflect on the rich tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and ideologies that have shaped the global cycling landscape. From the Netherlands' cycling utopia to Japan's blend of tradition and recreation, and from the urban cycling capitals of Copenhagen and Freiburg to the vibrant cycling hubs across the globe, we have witnessed the transformative power of two wheels.
One common thread unites these diverse cycling communities—the recognition that cycling is more than just a mode of transportation. It is a way of life, a means to connect with one's surroundings, and a catalyst for positive change. Whether it's the Netherlands' commitment to sustainability, Japan's pursuit of personal fulfilment, or the urban innovations of Copenhagen and Freiburg, each community has forged its path, leaving an indelible mark on the cycling world.
Through this journey, we have seen how cycling fosters a sense of community and belonging. It brings people together, transcending language barriers and cultural differences. The simple act of pedalling creates a shared experience, a common language that unites individuals from all walks of life.
Moreover, cycling has the power to transform our cities, making them more liveable, sustainable, and people-centred. The Netherlands has shown us the potential of dedicated infrastructure and a culture of respect on the road. Japan has reminded us of the importance of mindfulness and finding joy in the journey. Copenhagen and Freiburg have demonstrated the possibilities of urban planning that prioritise pedestrians and cyclists, creating vibrant, liveable spaces.
As we celebrate World Bike Day, let us carry the spirit of these cycling communities with us. Let us embrace the joy, freedom, and sense of connection that cycling brings. Whether we navigate the bustling streets of a metropolis, explore the tranquil countryside, or embark on our daily commutes, let us remember that every pedal stroke contributes to a more sustainable and inclusive future.
]]>In this blog, we will delve into the benefits of single-speed bikes for urban commuting and highlight why they have become a preferred choice for many city dwellers.
Single-speed bikes are renowned for their simplicity. With only one gear, they eliminate the complexities associated with multiple gears, derailleurs, and shifters. This simplicity translates into lower maintenance requirements, as there are fewer components that can malfunction or require adjustments.
Single-speed bikes are perfect for busy commuters who prefer a hassle-free ride without worrying about gear shifting or maintenance issues.
Urban commuting often involves navigating through congested streets, weaving in and out of traffic, and making quick turns. Single-speed bikes excel in this regard due to their lightweight and agile nature.
These bikes typically have a minimalistic design with fewer components, resulting in a lighter overall weight, making it easier to manoeuvre through tight spaces, accelerate swiftly, and handle sudden changes in direction, enhancing the overall commuting experience.
Commuting in urban environments can subject bikes to rough conditions, including potholes, curbs, and uneven surfaces.
Single-speed bikes, with their simpler construction, tend to be more durable and robust. They are built to withstand the demands of daily commuting, making them a reliable choice for navigating urban terrains.
The reduced number of moving parts also means fewer components susceptible to wear and tear, resulting in a longer lifespan for the bike.
Compared to bikes with multiple gears, single-speed bikes are generally more affordable. Their simpler design requires fewer components, resulting in a lower price tag.
Additionally, the reduced maintenance requirements contribute to long-term cost savings. With fewer parts to replace or repair, single-speed bikes prove to be a cost-effective option for urban commuters seeking a reliable means of transportation without breaking the bank.
Not forgetting, cycle commuters can save up to £3,000 annually compared to those commuting by car!
Single-speed bikes offer a unique riding experience that encourages riders to engage more actively. The absence of gears necessitates a consistent pedalling effort, which can lead to improved cardiovascular fitness and increased leg strength over time.
Commuting on a single-speed bike requires the rider to rely on their own power and stamina, resulting in a more engaging and rewarding cycling experience. And, let’s not forget all of the mental health benefits of commuting by bike!
Urban commuting is not just about reaching a destination; it's also an opportunity to connect with the city and its surroundings.
Single-speed bikes allow riders to experience the urban environment more intimately. The lack of distractions from gear shifting allows for better focus on the road, surroundings, and the vibrant cityscape. It creates a more immersive experience, enabling riders to appreciate the sights, sounds, and energy of their city as they pedal through its streets.
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to feel disconnected from our surroundings during our daily commutes. Single-speed bikes offer a unique opportunity to rediscover the joy of being present in the moment.
Without the distractions of gear shifting or a cramped train compartment, you can fully immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and vibrant energy of the city. Feel the wind on your face, listen to the bustling streets, and embrace the sensory experience that comes with cycling through your urban landscape.
Concerned about your environmental impact? Single-speed bikes are the epitome of sustainable transportation. By choosing to pedal your way to work instead of relying on a car or public transport, you contribute to reducing carbon emissions and fostering a greener future.
Be part of the movement towards eco-friendly commuting, and revel in the knowledge that you're making a positive difference with every turn of the pedal.
Commuting can be a stressful experience, especially when you're stuck in traffic or squeezed among a crowd of commuters. Single-speed bikes provide a refreshing escape from the daily grind. Not only do you avoid the stress of rush-hour congestion, but you also gain the flexibility to choose your own route, taking shortcuts and exploring hidden gems along the way.
Save time, sidestep the frustration, and arrive at your destination with a smile on your face.
Single-speed bikes offer numerous benefits for urban commuters, making them an attractive choice in the world of cycling. From their simplicity and low maintenance to their lightweight nature and durability, these bikes provide a practical and enjoyable solution for navigating busy city streets.
Whether you're looking for cost-effectiveness, improved fitness, or a deeper connection with your urban environment, a single-speed bike could be the perfect commuting companion. Embrace the simplicity, embrace the freedom, and embrace the urban commute with a single-speed bike from Hummingbird.

]]>We understand that when it comes to choosing a bike, the decision can be overwhelming, especially when deciding between belt-drive and chain-drive multi-speed bikes. That's why we've created this comprehensive buyer's guide to help you make an informed decision. By comparing and contrasting the two, you can determine which type of bike is best for your needs.
The debate between belt-drive and chain-drive bikes has been ongoing for years. Belt-drive bikes use a carbon fibre belt to transfer power from the pedals to the wheels, while chain-drive bikes use a metal chain. The main differences between the two are their maintenance requirements, durability, and cost.
This comparison table outlines the key features of Hummingbird's multi-speed belt-drive bike and our multi-speed chain bike, allowing for transparent side-by-side comparison.
If you like to weigh up your options before making a decision, the table below should allow you to identify the right fit for your cycling needs with ease.
Belt-drive bikes offer many advantages over their chain-driven counterparts. Firstly, they require less maintenance, making them a convenient option for those who don't have the time or desire to maintain their bike regularly.
Secondly, belt-drive bikes offer a cleaner operation, so you don't have to worry about getting grease on your clothes. Belt-drive bikes are also much quieter than chain-drive bikes, making for a more pleasant ride. These benefits make belt-drive bikes an ideal choice for commuters and casual riders:
However, belt-drive bikes do have features that for some riders, might be considered as drawbacks. They can have a limited gear range, and they are often more expensive than chain-drive bikes:
On the other hand, chain-drive bikes offer a wider gear range, making them an excellent choice for cyclists who need to tackle steep hills and varied terrain. They are also typically less expensive than belt-drive bikes, which makes them a more budget-friendly option for those who don't want to break the bank:
Regarding maintenance time, chain-drive bikes require more TLC than belt-drive bikes. The chain will need cleaning, lubricating and occasionally changing. Chain-drive bikes can also be messier to operate, as the chain can easily pick up dirt and debris, making it more challenging to keep the bike clean, and maybe not ideal for those morning commuters cycling in their work suit.
Belt drives are a relatively new technology in the world of cycling.
Their strong and durable materials are intended to last without high maintenance, unlike chain drives that require consistent lubrication and cleaning. The increased cleanliness of belt-drive bikes is a particular advantage to cycle commuters, who don't want to dirty their work clothes on excess chain grease or lubrication.
There are also far fewer moving parts on belt-drives than chain-driven, lessening the overall ongoing maintenance. In contrast, chain bikes use many moving parts that need your care and attention to ensure it stays free of dust, moisture, mud and excess lubrication.
Another advantage of a belt drive is its longevity. With fewer moving parts comes limited wear, so a belt drive typically lasts longer than a traditional chain, ridden under the same conditions.
Belt drives do cost more upfront than chain drive systems, and there are inevitably fewer bike shops to service them or sell spare parts. When something goes wrong, the bike might be out of action longer than it would be with a chain drive system, and repair on the road is achievable with a chain drive system.
The chain drive has been around so long that most bike designs are made with this system in mind. Fitting or repairing any of the components in a chain drive requires little planning, and plenty of qualified specialists to take on the job. Spare parts, replacement parts, and servicing for chain drives are readily available, and all bike shops will usually be able to get hold of any chain, lubricant, sprocket or chainring.
Choosing the bike most suited to you is a personal decision that only you can make based on your preferences and needs.
If you're a casual rider or commuter who values convenience and cleanliness, you might prefer a belt-drive bike. If you need a more universally-adaptable bike and are willing to invest more time and effort into maintenance, a chain-drive bike may be a better choice.
At Hummingbird Bikes, we offer both types of bikes, so no matter which option you choose, you can trust that you're getting a high-quality, lightweight folding bike that is built to last.

Let us tell you all about the technical details that make this bike stand out from the crowd.
For starters, it's got a Shimano Nexus 8-speed gear hub that's versatile and efficient. The twist grip shifter makes it easy to switch between gears, even when you're stopped at a light. And because of Shimano's precise manufacturing, you'll enjoy quick, smooth, and quiet shifting, with significantly less drag than previous models.
And let's not forget about the belt drive system itself, which offers a clean, low-maintenance, and super-quiet ride. Unlike chain drives, our carbon-reinforced belts never need grease and are practically maintenance-free. That means no more worrying about grease marks on your clothes, and more time spent enjoying the ride!
The brake levers on the multi-speed folding bike are CNC ultralight, which means you'll be able to stop on a dime without adding any extra weight to your ride. The Shimano dual pivot design brake callipers keep operating friction to a minimum, and the Jagwire ultra-slick cables ensure smooth and effortless braking every time.
The full carbon seat post with titanium hardware and CNC-designed seat clamp add to the bike's sleek and streamlined design, while the Shimano Alfine crankset and 48-tooth chainring with integrated CNC chain guard give you all the power and efficiency you need for a smooth ride.
But it's not just about power - this bike is designed for comfort too. The ultra-light EVA foam grips and full carbon handlebars with a 50mm rise allow for easy adjustment of your reach, while the ultra-light carbon rails on the seat, high-density padding, and ergonomic cut-out provide unbeatable comfort for even the longest rides.
Plus, with its compact folding design and approximate folded dimensions of 117x60x20 centimetres, this bike is easy to store and transport. And with a maximum weight limit of 110 kg, it's the perfect choice for riders of all sizes.
But why take our word for it? A previous customer and proud owner of our multi-speed belt drive, Chandrakant B. says "My Dream belt bike! Me and my family have been really enjoying riding the Hummingbird. It is a smooth ride, very lightweight and easy to assemble. ]]>While modern-day bikes look all too similar to the two-wheeled, handlebar-donning bicycle invention from the late 1800s, many technological and mechanical advances have vastly improved the ease, functionality and sustainability of cycling; but, a little (humming)bird tells us this evolution is just the beginning for cycle technology.
While industry experts predict some remarkable concepts are here to shake up the industry in the distant future, let's look at more time-relevant innovations and trends that will redefine the cycles we ride today and in the short time ahead.
In this blog post, we will explore the present and future of transformative cycle technology. We will delve into various aspects of cycling, such as sustainability, affordability, comfort, lightweight design, and new technologies such as super-capacitors and 3D printing.
Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or someone just starting to dip their toes in the world of cycling, this post is sure to be an informative read.
As more people turn to cycling as a mode of transportation, it's essential to consider the environmental impact of the industry. Many bike manufacturers are implementing sustainable materials and practices in their designs. There are many renewable resources that are being thrust to the forefront for sustainable cycling, such as carbon, bamboo and our very own flax plant fibre bike. Some companies are using recycled materials to create bike components such as seats and handlebars.
Cargo bikes are also becoming increasingly popular as a sustainable transportation option. These bikes are designed to carry heavy loads, to transport groceries, luggage, or even children. They offer a practical solution to reduce the use of cars and public transportation while promoting a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
Finally, some companies are exploring the use of supercapacitors in bikes. These devices store and release energy quickly, making them ideal for use in electric bikes. Super-capacitors have a longer lifespan than traditional batteries and can be recharged quickly, making them a more sustainable option for e-bikes.
Consider the environmental impact of your cycling choices and explore sustainable bike options such as cargo bikes or those made from planet-friendly materials.
3D printing technology has already transformed many industries, and it's starting to impact the cycling world.
One of the most significant benefits of 3D printing is its ability to create complex shapes and designs that would be difficult or impossible with traditional manufacturing methods, allowing bike manufacturers to create intricate components for a rider's needs.
For example, companies now use 3D printing to create bike frames and forks. In doing so, they can create unique designs that are tailored to the rider's body shape and riding style. 3D printing also offers faster turnaround times and reduced waste compared to traditional manufacturing methods.
In the future, it's possible that 3D printing will become more widespread in the cycling industry, leading to affordable and customisable bikes with a greater range of design options. It may also become easier for riders to replace or repair broken parts, as replacement components could be 3D printed on-demand.
The integration of technology into bikes is becoming increasingly common, and it's transforming the cycling experience. One of the most significant developments in recent years has been the integration of GPS technology into bike computers. These devices can track your route, speed, distance, and other metrics and provide turn-by-turn directions to help you navigate.
Many bike computers also offer the ability to connect to your smartphone, allowing you to receive notifications and control music playback without taking your phone out of your pocket. Some even offer advanced features such as monitoring your heart rate or power output.
Another way that technology is being integrated into bikes is through smart locks. These locks use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity to allow you to lock and unlock your bike using your smartphone. They can also send alerts to your phone if someone tries to tamper with your bike.
In the future, we may see even more integration of technology into bikes, such as augmented reality displays that provide real-time data and information, or sensors that can monitor road conditions and adjust suspension settings on the fly.
Electric bikes, also known as e-bikes, are a growing trend in the cycling industry. Although they are certainly nothing new, it's the evolution and development of e-bikes that are taking the cycling world by storm.
E-bikes were renowned for being bulky, heavy and largely impractical, especially on journeys where the bike might need manoeuvring, the morning commute, for example. But that is set to be a distant memory.
Advancements in electric bike technology have made it possible to go faster and further than ever before, all without weighing the world. Look at Hummingbird for example, our electric bike weighs a mere 10.3kg, which is lighter than some standard road bikes!
Some e-bikes are equipped with throttle control, allowing riders to sit back and let the bike do the work. Other bikes come with a pedal-assist system, where the motor provides an extra boost while you're pedalling.
One of the biggest benefits of electric bikes is their ability to make cycling more accessible to people who may not have the fitness or endurance for traditional cycling. They are also a great option for commuting, allowing you to travel further and faster without breaking a sweat. Additionally, they offer a sustainable transportation option, helping to reduce the carbon footprint of our daily commutes.
If you're considering purchasing an electric bike, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, they tend to be more expensive than traditional bikes, so be sure to factor that into your decision. However, the benefits they provide can make them well worth the investment. Second, check your local regulations as e-bike laws may vary depending on your location.
Consider the benefits of electric bikes and if they are a good fit for your cycling needs. Explore different models and find the one that's right for you.
One of the biggest barriers to entry in the cycling world is the cost of a bike. However, many companies now offer financing options to make purchasing a bike more accessible. Some shops offer payment plans where you can pay for a bike over time, Klarna or ClearPay, for example. Others offer credit options with low-interest rates, making it easier to finance your bike purchase.
For some UK workers, there might also be the option to pay for a brand new bike through a tax-free monthly salary sacrifice if your company registers with a cycle to work scheme, such as Cycle Scheme.
If you're interested in purchasing a bike but are concerned about the cost, explore financing options or look for a used bike. You can now treat yourself to a Hummingbird folding bike using Klarna and Cycle Scheme.
The cycling industry is ever evolving, and new technologies and innovations are changing how we ride. From e-bikes and cargo bikes, to 3D printing and device integration, exciting developments are on the horizon.
While it's impossible to predict exactly what the future of cycling will look like, it's clear that sustainability and affordability will continue to be important factors. As we look to the future, we can expect to see more eco-friendly materials and manufacturing processes, as well as a greater emphasis on making bikes accessible to all.
If you're a cycling enthusiast, there's never been a better time to get involved. With so many exciting developments, there's no telling what amazing new technologies and innovations are just around the corner.

A brain-boosting duo that studies prove works wonders for mental and emotional health, improving anxiety, stress and depression levels.
Cycleplan surveyed cyclists to examine the noticeable mental health benefits of cycling after taking up the hobby. The results showed that 75% of cyclists noticed enhancements to their mental health, with 8% believing it directly helped their anxiety or depression.
Whether you hope to boost your serotonin levels or improve your whole body fitness, the rhythmic, aerobic exercise and low-impact nature of cycling are unbeatable.
You can ease some life stresses with your favourite dinner or a long soak in the bath. Some, however, take a dedicated, longer-term approach.
Cortisol is the body's stress hormone, and thankfully, research has shown that you can reduce levels of cortisol through exercises such as cycling.
Stress occurs for many reasons, high-tension jobs, significant life changes, and feelings of pressure, among a lengthy list of other causes. If cortisol is high for a long time, it can increase the chances of insomnia, depression and digestive issues, so it's important to keep on top of it and reduce stress in your life.
Cycling can also reduce the physical symptoms of stress, such as tension in your body.
Starting any physical activity such as swimming, hitting the gym or taking a spin class, are all effective ways of improving your mental health. However, there is a gift of cycling that many exercises can't offer; getting people out in the open and enjoying nature.
Studies have shown that partaking in exercise outdoors was linked to heightened energy and increased feelings of rejuvenation and optimism, alongside a decrease in anger, tension and depression.
Anxiety has a real impact on a person's quality of life, causing panic attacks, social anxiety or the ability to carry out everyday tasks. The severity can be anything from mild to crippling, the latter of which can taint relationships, social life or even their ability to keep a job.
Aerobic exercise, such as cycling, is proven to reduce anxiety levels over a period of time, which is the gateway to panic disorder and panic attacks.
Years of scientific research from The University of Toronto were reviewed and proved that regular exercise treats and prevents depression. Findings show that exercising three times per week can improve feelings of depression and reduces the risk of it developing by up to 19%.
Cycling three times a week generally encourages healthier habits like a better diet and improved sleep quality, both also help power a more positive brain, which can help to ease depression and other mental health concerns.
You know what they say, healthy body, healthy mind.
Regular exercise, combined with healthier habits like a balanced diet and improved sleep, will naturally boost your self-esteem and make you feel good about yourself. A realisation of self-worth and enhanced self-esteem are known for helping to ease feelings of sadness or depression.
Cycling clams cortisol levels in the body, the stress hormone that can cause restless and light sleep. On the contrary, it boosts serotonin which encourages improvements in deep sleep.
The circadian rhythm also has an impact on sleep patterns. Cycling stabilises your circadian rhythm to help make a great night's sleep possible. And well, we all know how much a good night's sleep improves your mood, boosts energy and increases productivity.
We've saved this one until last because while it's not directly linked to your mental health, it is certainly a serotonin-boosting benefit of cycling. Riding your bike is a great way to incorporate social activity into your day.
Whether you join a cycling club or your friends are also keen to explore the outdoors on two wheels, cycling with friends, family or co-workers is unbeatable as far as exercise goes.
]]>For Hummingbird, 2022 was filled with a number of proud, standout moments that we, too, would like to reflect on before we head into 2023.
With that said, here's a yearly round-up of Hummingbird's 2022 achievements:
Our biggest and possibly proudest achievement of 2022 was launching our pioneering folding flax bike.
After many tests, trials, tribulations and prototypes, in April, we were ecstatic to release our sustainable innovation to the world.
State-of-the-art technology and artisanal craftsmanship worked in harmony on this creation; from transforming the plant fibres into a material to hand cutting the textile and delicate hand-finished details, the flax bike is handcrafted from field to frame.
A first of its kind, our Flax frame is made entirely from plant fibres. The waste generated during production is biodegradable, and the nature of the frame means it will eventually break down at the end of its lifecycle. Our flax bike truly is the most sustainable form of transportation, only preceded by walking.
You asked, we listened.
A goal for 2022 was to reintroduce a belt drive option back into our line, and we did so on our original multi-speed folding bike.
We spent some time reinventing our existing technology and making it the most efficient and effective belt drive it could be before we reintroduced it to the masses.
We created a carbon-reinforced belt that runs smoother and quieter than ever before while preserving its clean, low-maintenance nature.
Before long, we were ready for our upgraded multi-speed belt drive bike to hit the market: fabricated for urban life and designed for freedom!
Another unforgettable moment from 2022 was our collaboration with a British icon, motorsports pioneer and World Champion F1 team all wrapped up into one - British Racing Motors.
An unbelievable opportunity that we couldn't surpass, Hummingbird worked alongside the masterminds at BRM to create a bike that embodies the DNA of both forces, comprising exceptional engineering, innovative materials and undeniable design.
Together, we designed a folding bike that presents an honourable nod to BRM's impeccable motorsports history while encapsulating some of Hummingbird's finest ideas.
The limited edition BRM x Hummingbird bike was crafted from our innovative flax material and featured an advanced belt drive system and high-performance tyres, but the finer details make this bike special.
The run of 17 bikes features unmistakeable elements such as Brooks Leather saddle and handlebars, a racing-green body with an exposed flax window, and a VIN plate depicting a unique number from 1 to 17, representing each of BRM's World Championship titles.
Two British icons, one classic bike!
We hope for more wonderful releases, collaborations and creations for 2023, and we hope you'll stay tuned for the ride.

]]>As far as renewable sources go, flax's planet-friendly cultivation and reliable, mechanical performance properties work in synchronicity with sustainable innovation..
Technical flax fibre has remarkable properties:
...properties that make the composite an unstoppable force across industries and applications.
Natural fibres such as flax are not just carbon neutral; they can also be carbon negative.
The eco-friendliness of the technical fibre starts far earlier than its inception.
European Flax is a virtuous chain; responsible, ecological and traceable at every stage, with organisations like the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp (CELC) existing to ensure transparency of EU flax and linen.
Linen is consistent with the three pillars of sustainable development; societal, economic, environmental, and European regulations are among the most stringent in the world.
As well as being a zero-waste plant, flax requires minimal fertiliser, zero pesticides, and no irrigation, and the roots of the plant contribute to soil regeneration.
If any process was to compromise the otherwise ecologically nutritious method, it is retting. If farmers use chemicals or irrigation, retting can have harmful environmental impacts. However, assured European flax has a 100% natural retting process, eliminating this concern.
Throughout cultivation, flax fields act like carbon sinks, storing up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. This astonishing amount is equivalent to the CO2 emissions generated by driving a petrol Renault Clio around the world 100,000 times.
But, to make its planet-friendliness more relatable, let's look at a flax plant product you probably own - a linen shirt.
The environmental impact of a linen shirt is seven times lower than its cotton counterpart, and wearing this linen shirt for just one day saves almost 20 litres of water compared to a cotton shirt.
Prodrive has been a leader in developing sustainable composites for some time. Its P2T technology (primary to tertiary) reduces carbon fibre multiple times and was used in the rear wing for the Aston Martin Vantage GT4 race cars, for example.
John McQuilliam FIMM, director of engineering at Prodrive Composites said, "We have parallel developments using two approaches to sustainability, based on recycled fibres and natural fibres.
"Though our conventional composite manufacturing will continue, we expect the major growth in the business to be from recycled products, including the recycling of our products to make new parts."
With F1 announcing its plans to be carbon neutral by 2030, Prodrive expects a significant rise in demand for sustainable natural composites across the motorsports sector.
When we started creating the flax folding bike with Prodrive, we quickly realised how revolutionary our creation was for the industry. After walking, a flax folding bike is the most sustainable form of transport after walking, and it's the first of its kind to be made entirely of flax plant fibres.
The waste generated during production is biodegradable, much less harmful to dispose of and recycle, and even when your bike reaches the end of its lifecycle, the frame will eventually breakdown, unlike its carbon fibre predecessor.
After already hitting the spotlight on the tracks, Hummingbird and Prodrive brings the power of flax to the city streets; for the first time.
Sports equipment specialists - Babolat - partnered with EcoTechnilin - an international supplier of natural fibres - to create the high-absorption 'NF2 TECH' tennis racquet.
NF2 TECH uses flax fibre at stress points of the racquet to absorb vibrations. Flax inserts in the handle and at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions on the racquet head dampen impact vibrations and optimise acoustics, creating a much softer sound at ball impact.
If the NF2 TECH is a success upon its launch in January 2023, we're confident the collaboration will be a gateway for the use of flax in sports.
The construction industry has a huge carbon footprint and contributes to an immense consumption of resources. Luckily, decision-makers have realised something needs to give.
The EU project, Smart Circular Bridge, is developing three bio-composite bridges using flax fibres combined with a special bio-resin, creating a material with properties relative to steel or aluminium.
The Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands is leading the project, along with a consortium of 15 international partners. The first 15-metre bridge opened in the Netherlands in April 2022, with two more smart circular bridges to follow in Germany and a second in the Netherlands later in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
Natural composite manufacturer, Bcomp, is dominating high-performance flax innovations. The Swiss firm has developed two technical fabrics, ampliTex™ and powerRibs™, both of which uniquely use flax fibre.
The ampliTex™ range is a series of technical, lightweight natural reinforcement fabrics for high-performance fabrics. Its exceptional properties include:
ampliTex™ can be used in various manufacturing scenarios, and the quality, thickness and twist of the fibre are engineered for prime mechanical properties.
The material is in use across automotive, marine, and motorsports industries featuring an impressive portfolio of products, including:

]]>The fibre comes from the Flax plant, also known as Linum, which has a rich history of producing the first textile known to mankind; linen.
Flax fibre is used as a reliable composite across many industries, including energy, construction, or bike manufacturing in the case of Hummingbird. But long before its modification into a high-performance fibre, the flax plant was used for soft furnishings, clothing, and currency.
As we push towards sustainable innovation and seek ethical means of producing everyday items, flax plant manufacturing has been thrust to the forefront.
But first, let’s go back to the beginning…
Linen dates back to 36,000 BC after evidence of the fabric was found in pre-historic Georgian caves, becoming the first textile plant fibre in the history of humanity.
Flax and linen were present in many remarkable moments of history, often regarded as the fibre of civilisation. Let’s take a look at some of its renowned uses:
Linen was invaluable for ancient Egyptians. The low-maintenance flax plant requires little water, offering easy cultivation for Egyptian farmers.
The yearly flooding of the River Nile supplied enough water to germinate flax seeds and only needed intermittent watering for the next 100 days. Linen had many uses; clothing - the cooling properties made it ideal for the Egyptian climate - furnishings, and the Pharaos came to use linen for burial garments for mummies.
Alexander the Great, a notable figure of Ancient Greece, is depicted in art and history books wearing armour. But did you know this armour was made from linen?
Alexander and his soldiers wore linothorax to protect themselves in battle, a type of body armour made by laminating layers of linen together.
Over 30m2 of linen textiles formed the embellished torso and shoulder guards, while the upper leg and groin protection were made from thick leather.
Jean-Baptiste Cambray, a weaver from Cambrai, France, invented a fine cloth called batiste. The batiste was made from linen, and it quickly became known as the cloth of Kings.
In 1810, Napoleon I halted importing English cotton fabrics into Europe and offered one million Francs to the inventor who could create the machine for spinning flax yarn.
As a result of this offering, French engineer Philippe Henri de Girard invented the first flax-spinning frame in 1810.
By 2012, the high-performance flax fibre became essential to the composites industry.
As of 2020, flax became one of the most pioneering and progressive sustainable materials in automotive when it made its motorsports debut, with McLaren's Formula 1 seats crafted from fibre. Shortly after, Porsche introduced the Cayman 718 GT4 CS MR, with a full body kit made using Amplitex, deriving from flax.
Our timeline can't come to an end without the mention of our Hummingbird flax bike. Created as a mission to make a sustainable model, we crafted a folding bike frame made from a flax sheet material, which is as robust and lightweight as carbon fibre, but all the more sustainable.
Europe is the world leader in Flax production for quality, quantity AND responsibility. 80% of the world's flax comes from Europe, with farmers in these regions honing their craft over a lifetime.
Flax cultivation isn't taught in schools. Farmers dedicate their working life to the plant and learn all there is to know about responsible harvesting before handing their wisdom from generation to generation.
But, why Europe?
The continent has 162,851 hectares of long fibres, predominantly in France, The Netherlands and Belgium, and Europe has the ideal climate for a plant that is unpretentious in care.
Furthermore, European flax farmers are experts in traceability, their processes respect the people, the plant and the planet.
The territory is one of the most crucial elements of flax farming, and preservation requires the farmer’s know-how and geo-climatic conditions to work in perfect harmony.
The time-honoured cultivation processes used by European farmers ensure soil regeneration and conserve agricultural biodiversity:
Natural flax fibre is the champion of sustainable innovation. Out of a 7-step technique, the first three processes are completed entirely by nature:
Seeds are sown from March to April.
Within 100 days, the plant grows to 1m high. The plant requires zero irrigation, no defoliants and minimal fertiliser; rainwater and its nutrients are enough.
By June, the plants bloom with a blossoming flower in the morning, disappearing by evening.
Typically in July, farmers use harvesting equipment to pull the flax instead of cutting, which preserves the stalks and allows every inch of the zero-waste plant to be used.
Harvested stalks are then laid flat on the ground in metre-wide windrows.
The final all-natural process is retting from July to September. Retting happens on the ground, with the climate and microorganisms from the soil transforming the plant 100% naturally.
The bonds that attach the fibres to the stalk are eliminated by nature, and the flax is turned over mid-way through the process to ensure consistency.
After retting, farmers assemble the flax into bales.
A scutcher extracts the flax fibres from the plant's shives using a mechanical process.
The entire plant is used, the long fibres, short fibres and all of the by-products, including seeds, shives and even the dust is used to make insulation.
Fibres are hackled until they become ribbons of soft, shiny fibres.
The hackling process is completed using scutchers or spinners.
Spinners blend hackled flax, using fibres from different batches, different fields, regions, and even year groups. Over time, this enhances the homogeneity and quality of the yarn.
Quality requirements state one yarn can contain flax from up to 32 different batches.
The roves are transformed into yarn using a twisting process. The spinner can use two techniques, depending on the desired yarn:
The CELC created two certifications for European flax and linen.
To gain the certifications, independent auditors must first verify the products, you will then be granted either European Flax® or Masters of Linen®.
So, keep an eye out for CELC labels for the highest-quality European flax and linen products!
]]>However, only 47% of people aged five and over had access to a bicycle, and an even lesser amount used their bike to commute to work, with road safety concerns and lack of confidence being the two most common reasons for not biking to work.
Cycling has many health advantages, cuts costs and is easier on the planet, among other benefits. But, with commuters talking themselves out of picking up their bikes, we're going to bust any myths about cycling to work and help workers overcome potential barriers.
Most cycling 'issues' have solutions. Whether it's personal, safety or funding problems, here's how to overcome concerns about cycling on your daily commute.
If there isn't a safe and secure rack to lock your bike at work, look into buying a folding commuter bike. Folding bikes are small, lightweight and easy to carry, so if there's no parking solution outside of your office, these bikes will neatly fold up and sit next to or under your desk without disrupting the office. This is also great if you live in a smaller apartment with little to no extra space for a bike to live. Similarly, if your office or apartment block doesn't have lift access, at just 6.4kg, Hummingbird bikes are light enough to carry up the stairs!
Your commuter bike doesn't have to be all bells and whistles. If you want to start biking to work but can only afford a simple bike - don't worry about it - get yourself out there on a bike you are comfortable on.
If you want to upgrade your bike, see if your company is enrolled with a Cycle to Work scheme. Hummingbird is part of Cyclescheme, meaning you can purchase one of our single-speed, multi-speed bikes or electric folding bikes through your employer with amazing tax-free savings. You will pay for your bike through a monthly salary sacrifice over 12 months, and you have the option to purchase the bike for a fee at the end of the rental period.
If your journey to work is short and you have plenty of time to cycle slowly, you might not break a sweat. For the most part cycle commuters prefer to freshen up when they arrive at work. Many big city offices or co-working spaces have shower facilities. However, if not, you can take spare clothes to get changed in the toilets, and with a quick flannel down and spritz of deodorant, you will be good to go.
Like many life skills, cycling is easier to learn while growing up. But, if you didn't have the opportunity, it's never too late to learn. There are lessons you can take as an adult with qualified cycle trainers. Or if you have somebody to ask, you can always enlist the help of a friend or family member to help build your confidence on two wheels.
If you live in congested cities and your morning commute consists of sitting in traffic for 30 minutes, you might find that cycling to work is the quickest transport method. 47% of commuter journeys are 5 miles or under, meaning you can cycle to the office fairly quickly.
However, if you're tight on time due to distance, or it would be too physically demanding, you can try cycling part of your commute. You can cycle to your local train station or bus stop to depart on the second half of your journey. If you're completing a hybrid journey, portable folding bikes are ideal for transporting on buses or trains.
Everybody starts somewhere. You don't need to be that fit to start your cycle commute. Allow yourself enough time to take it easy on your journey and your fitness will gradually improve over the weeks.
As long as you prepare for your ride, there's no reason why you can't cycle in the rain or the cold weather. In case of thunderstorms, you might be best finding a different form of transport. However, most UK weather conditions are cycleable with preparation. If you buy cycling accessories such as mudguards, fog lights, waterproof jackets and overtrousers, you'll be dry enough by the time you get to work. Take a change of clothes in a waterproof bag just in case!
If there was a procedure to make employers more productive, your workplace healthier and your business more environmentally friendly, would you pay attention? That's where Cycle to Work schemes come in.
Cycle to Work schemes have benefits aplenty for employees and helps get them on two wheels, but what impact can registering to the schemes have on employers?
Without further ado, let’s dive into the Cycle to Work Scheme employer benefits.
When an employee orders a bike or cycling equipment through a scheme they pay through a salary sacrifice. Monthly instalments are taken from the employee's salary, reducing their gross pay.
Therefore, you - the employer - reduce your National Insurance contributions by 15.05% of the bike and equipment value, saving you cash.
Staff who cycle to work are typically fitter than those who commute by other means and are more likely to be productive at work due to increased energy levels.
What do fitter and more productive staff mean? Better job performance, work output and fewer sick days!
Cycling to work every morning can also increase the mental well-being of your employees, and showing that this is something your organisation takes seriously can improve work relations.
Corporate social responsibility extends beyond your employees walking through the doors. On average, a commuter who makes a 4-mile round trip to work by car can save 0.5 tonnes of CO2 if they switch to a more sustainable option, a bike.
Promoting eco-friendly methods of transport shows your organisation cares about the well-being of the environment and your employees. This showcases your moral values and ethics, which can improve the public perception of your business whilst lowering your carbon footprint; a win all-round.
Physical and mental wellness naturally improves staff attendance at work and can heighten tolerance to stress and self-confidence levels whilst at work.
Also, we are in a time when employers are seeking ways to tempt workers back into the office in an age of working from home. If employees don't have to battle traffic jams or crowded public transport every morning, and they genuinely enjoy their commute, it might tempt staff back into the office.
Cycle to Work schemes means fewer parking spaces are needed, meaning you could repurpose unused car park space or sell the land if you so wish. Up to 20 bicycles can fit in the same space as one single car, so there is a lot of potentials to reduce your office footprint.
Encouraging staff to cycle to work also reduces pollution and traffic congestion in the local area. All of the above can also save your employer cash on fuel, parking charges, and congestion fees and avoid fees such as London's ULEZ zone.
Bike purchases and cycling equipment can be classified as capital expenditure, enabling employers to claim capital allowances against the purchase cost.
Local authorities hoping to improve the local environment sometimes provide bike sheds free of charge, or at most, at a reduced cost.
Aside from this, schemes are completely free for employers to join and have dedicated support staff and account managers to help coordinate and implement financial arrangements, admin and marketing at zero cost. Therefore, joining a Cycle to Work scheme has zero impact on your business's finances.
Typically, employers can save up to 15.05% in National Insurance Contributions for every employee who purchases a bike through the scheme. To put this into numbers, employers will save £138 for every £1,000 spent on a bicycle or equipment. Over the lease period, you will also fully recover the initial cost of the bike.
You can calculate more precise savings using Cycle Scheme's online savings calculator.
Registering with a Cycle to Work scheme is simple and easy to manage.

Approximately 1.6 million commuters from over 40,000 employers have taken advantage of the scheme, and you can, too.
But how does a cycle to work scheme work?
We have covered the ins and outs of the scheme, explaining what it is, how it works, how to see if you qualify and how to purchase your tax-free bike.
Essentially, your employer will purchase a bike which you will then 'hire' through a salary sacrifice. By paying this way and spreading the cost, you will save overall by not paying tax and National Insurance contributions on the monthly fees. The salary sacrifice comes from your gross salary, not your net salary.
Spending tax-free cash on bikes and cycling equipment has saved employees up to 42 per cent on what they would spend if they were to make the same purchase outside of the scheme. Previously, there was a cap of £1,000, meaning cyclists could only acquire starter bikes. However, the government removed this cap, and employees now have a much wider choice of bikes or equipment under the new guidelines, including folding city bikes and electric bikes.
The scheme started to promote the cycling commute, not cycling in general. Your employer technically owns the bike once the 'hire' period is over, but at this stage, you will typically have the option to buy the bike from your employer.
Savings vary per transaction, depending on your tax bracket and the cost of the bike and equipment you buy.
Because the repayments reduce your gross salary, you won't be charged tax and National Insurance contributions that you would usually pay on that chunk of your salary.
For a basic rate taxpayer, this equates to 32 per cent of the bike purchase price. For higher rate taxpayers, you can save up to 42 per cent.
If you have the cost of the bike you want to buy and your gross salary to hand, you can use the Green Commute Initiative's online calculator to work out:
Because the scheme reduces your gross salary, it's worth discussing some finer details with your employer, including the impact it may - or may not - have on your statutory sick pay or your pension pot.
Each cycle scheme will have a unique application process. They are fairly straightforward and will typically look something like this:
Are you ready to apply?
If you have been instructed to start your application directly through the scheme, you will need:
As we briefly mentioned, you will be 'hiring' the bike for the length of your agreement. Although many people choose to purchase the bike from their employer at the end of the term, there are a few options:
New agreements can run for different lengths of time depending on the scheme you are signed up to. Typically, the usage of your bike will be up to four or five years.
HMRC rules state that to buy the bike at the end of the term, you will have to make a one-off payment to the provider. This fee is based on how long you have been using the bike and its initial value.
Below are the minimum values that HMRC places on used bikes for different ages:

For purchases with the Cycle Scheme, you can pay a small refundable deposit at the end of your hire period, letting you keep the bike for a further three years. After these three years, the bike becomes yours at no extra cost. You can also change jobs and enrol in a new scheme during this time.
People leave jobs for many reasons, it's a part of life. But what happens if this occurs during your hire period?
If you want to keep the commuter bike, you will need to pay off the remaining balance, and sometimes the employer might charge the depreciated value of the bike and or accessories, too. Sometimes, your employer might decide they want to keep the bike, or you might want to return it anyway.
If you do decide to keep the bike and come to an agreement with your employer, you will repay the remaining balance from your final net salary without the tax and National Insurance savings.
As long as your employer has registered to a Cycle to Work provider, any employee over the age of 18 is entitled to apply.
Employers have been recognising the environmental and employee benefits of cycling to work for many years, but this is even more prevalent following the pandemic. So, there is a high chance your employer will be registered, especially in cities such as London.
If you are self-employed, don't worry - there is still a way!
You can use a scheme if your business is set up in a way that you are technically employed by your own limited company. If not, you can purchase a bike and claim the VAT back through the business.
Hummingbird is proudly registered with Cycle Scheme, one of the UK’s leading Cycle to Work schemes. The scheme allows you to purchase Hummingbird’s lightweight folding bikes and cycling accessories, making unbeatable savings through a tax break.
Owing to changes in the scheme, this also includes our Hummingbird folding electric bike!
